With the proliferation of the Internet, everybody’s computers these days get bogged down with all sorts of extra detritus that you pick up the more time you spend online. Temporary files, cookies, and other junk files just slow down your PC, not to mention more dangerous things like malware or viruses. Uniblue’s SpeedUpMyPC is a new piece of software that looks to help those of us suffering from bogged-down PCs.
Out of the box, Uniblue’s SpeedUpMyPC is a piece of cake to install and get up and running. It’s a very simple step-by-step process that only requires you to click a button, aside from having to enter a registration key.
See how your computer is performing and how it can be improved
Interactivity and intuitiveness are two things that I always look for when reviewing software and Uniblue’s SpeedUpMyPC has these in spades. As soon as you fire it up, it starts scanning your computer to see how it is performing and how it can be improved.
Once you’re done scanning, click on the “Optimization” tab that can show you the intricate details about your computer’s memory usage, disk usage, etc. if you are interested in that sort of thing. Most folks aren’t, but I found it pretty handy to have it included.
Another cool thing they’ve included in this tab is the ability to disable certain programs at Startup. The main reason a lot of PCs run slow is that they have a lot of programs running in the background that the owner, if they’re not paying attention, may have no idea about. SpeedUpMyPC lets you turn them off with the click of a button.
Find all the unnecessary junk that’s been causing your PC
The “Clean Up” tab is what it’s all about, by and large. This is the place where you can find all the unnecessary junk that’s been causing your PC (and you) headaches. Temp files, junk files, unnecessary programs, and malicious software will all be found here after the scan. You can go over them all individually and trash them or “Select All” and flush them all with one fell swoop.
Customize SpeedUpMyPC to your preferences
There is, of course, a “Settings” tab that lets you customize SpeedUpMyPC to your preferences. You can set it up to scan whenever you boot up windows, show in your System Tray when it’s minimized, and do an automatic scan when an application loads.
Overall, though, I would say that these options do the exact opposite of what you’re looking for – speeding up your PC. They’re great if you’re super paranoid, but you’d probably be better off doing the occasional scan yourself by hand. Set it up to scan when you’re not going to be using your PC and you don’t have to worry about getting slowdowns.
Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC Summary
All in all, I’d say that Uniblue’s SpeedUpMyPC is a worthy investment for just about any PC owner. Granted, a lot of these features are included in Windows, but if you don’t know how to find them and use them, you probably never will. Of course, if you have half a brain you probably have a fair amount of mistrust of Microsoft and don’t want to rely on them for everything.
It’s for this reason that I find the $30 that Uniblue charges for SpeedUpMyPC to be pretty reasonable, considering what you get out of the deal. This program puts everything you need in one place when it comes to optimizing your PC. If you do pick this up, I would recommend, however, getting another similar program or two to have some redundancies and make sure that you catch everything.
