As a pc technician the best advice I can give to you is DO NOT mess with the registry. If something is accidentally deleted it can render your computer useless and require formatting of the hard disk. If you choose to do It however make sure you have backups of important files on cd/dvd and create a system restore point… that way if something goes wrong you can at least attempt to recover windows. I have never used a registry cleaner/ optimizer and all 10 computers I own both personally and Business related work just fine.

You should have dedicated registry cleaner like Regcure. Protect your investment and ensure maximum PC speed and performance with RegCure registry cleaner. Compatible with all Microsoft products and third party applications, RegCure seeks out and repairs those issues in your registry that lead to poor performance such as remnants left behind on your registry from failed installations, incomplete un-installations, disabled drivers, and spyware applications.

I wanted to suggest the free Comodo Registry Cleaner, but you have the one in TuneUp Utilites. That is a good and reliable one.
It does not harm your computer to have another good and safe reg. cleaner.
Why not try out Comodo Registry Cleaner

To keep a Windows system running at peak efficiency, registry cleaning is one procedure to do using “CCleaner”:
Freeware.
Download; create a ‘Restore Point; install CCleaner; then:
On the main CC window, the ‘paintbrush’ tab is for the Windows components that you can clean; tick the bottom right box (Run Cleaner) an it will delete (or overwrite option) those files.
Same for ‘applications’ tab.
Next, down from the’ paintbrush’ is the ‘Registry’ icon (like a Rubik’s Cube); first tick ‘Scan for issues’ button on the bottom; wait for the process to run.
it’ll show a long list of entries for the first couple of cleanings; (Back up your first couple of registry cleanings, and if your unit gets ungovernable, restore those files. I’ve never had to do it, so I can’t tell you how. After that the cleanings will be for empty folders or other junk so backup likely won’t be necessary).
When ready, tick the ‘Fix Selected entries’ and CC will take care of those.
For your 1st few uses, have checked the ‘show prompt to back up registry files’; open CC> Options> Advanced> check the ‘show prompt…’ box; then tick the ‘yes’ or confirm to back up the registry. (It gets saved to the ‘c’ drive, as ‘ccxxxxxx’)
Also, it’s handy to put a shortcut to CC in your recycle bin folder so you don’t have to open the app. every time.
CC> Options> Settings> tick the ‘Add Run CC Option to Recycle bin’
Also, if you use your browsing history a lot, you may want to un-check that box on the ‘Cleaner> Internet Explorer’ > History box; (otherwise, it clears your history file).

I use and recommend the Comodo Registry Cleaner as also suggested by Johan above.
Stay away from RegCure as suggested by “Security…” as it is made by Paretologic, the same company that makes the crapware Xoftspy.
Regcure will scan your system for free and then will claim to find about a gazillion errors to scare you, which it won’t fix until you buy it. That’s the same tactic that Xoftspy uses.

This is a hotly debated question. Some people swear by registry cleaners others say you don’t need them anymore especially with Windows Vista.
It is true that it is very important back up your registry before using a registry cleaner or playing with the registry yourself. I go one step further and create a Windows restore point before I do anything.
That being said, I myself have had good results using a registry cleaner. I started using it with Windows XP after a friend recommended one to me. It think it was Registry Mechanic. For me it worked and helped my computer significantly.
Now I use Windows Vista and I still use a registry cleaner every now and then. I am currently using RegCure because I think it does a really great job and I have never had complications from it.
I think the program you have will do a good job so I would try it. I only clean my registry when I it seems to get a little sluggish. I don’t go overboard and clean the registry habitually.
Hope this helps.
